Meridian Maintenance, Tunbridge Wells and Kent
Moss and debris cleared from roofs, valleys and gutters, plus roof and gutter repairs to keep the weather out.
Moss looks harmless, but on a roof it holds water against the tiles, works under their edges and washes down into the gutters, where it blocks the outlets. Clearing it, along with the leaves and debris that gather in the valleys, helps a roof shed water the way it was designed to. We clean roofs and carry out roof and gutter repairs across Kent, and we always explain plainly what we have found.
Moss acts like a sponge. It keeps the surface of the tiles wet long after the rain has stopped, and in cold weather that trapped water can freeze and expand. Thick moss can also lift the edges of tiles and slates and gives other growth somewhere to root. The worst of it is usually on the shaded side of the roof and anywhere trees overhang.
Valleys, where two slopes of a roof meet, collect leaves, moss and silt. Left alone that debris holds water and can push it under the tiles along the edges of the valley. Keeping the valleys and the gutters clear is one of the simplest ways to look after a roof.

It can be. Moss holds water against the tiles, can lift their edges and washes into the gutters, where it causes blockages. A light covering is mostly cosmetic, but thick moss is worth dealing with.
Moss is usually taken off by hand, working down the roof, and the debris is then cleared out of the valleys and gutters. Very high pressure washing is generally avoided on roof tiles, because it can damage their surface.

There is no fixed timetable. Shaded roofs under trees grow moss much faster than open, sunny ones. If you can see thick moss along the tiles or in the gutters from the ground, it is time to have it looked at.

Had my gutters cleaned on 23 March 2026 using vacuum suction, very thorough, very pleased with the service.
