Crumbling and missing mortar raked out and replaced with fresh joints, so walls stay weathertight and look sharp again.
Mortar is meant to be the weak point in a wall, wearing away slowly so the bricks do not have to. Over the years it cracks, crumbles and drops out of the joints, letting rain soak into the wall. Re-pointing means raking out the failed mortar and replacing it with fresh, neatly finished joints, and we match the mortar and the joint style to your wall as closely as we can.
Open joints let water into a wall. Once it is in, it can cause damp patches inside, and in winter frost can push the faces off bricks. Re-pointing seals the wall again and stops small problems turning into big ones, which is far cheaper than replacing damaged brickwork later.
Many older walls were built with softer, lime based mortar. Repairing them with a very hard cement mix can trap moisture and damage the bricks over time, so the mix should suit the wall. The joint profile, whether flush, bucket handle, weathered or recessed, also makes a big difference to how the finished wall looks.
Re-pointing is not just for houses. Boundary walls, retaining walls, steps and patio joints all lose mortar over time, and they are often quick jobs that make a big difference to how a garden looks.
